Continuous Glucose Monitors: A Valuable Tool—If Only They Could Stay On…

CGMs represent a significant breakthrough in medical monitoring devices, providing real-time data that can help you anticipate potential glucose levels. One of the major benefits of using CGMs is that they reduce, or even eliminate, the need for finger pricks to monitor blood glucose. However, the challenge lies in ensuring they stay in place, as they can be costly. We aim to maximize their usable life since we certainly don’t want them to detach prematurely.
How to keep CGMs on:
- Choosing the Right Location for Your Device
It’s essential to choose a spot where the device won’t obstruct your daily activities or be in your way. Steer clear of locations that are tucked away in folds or easily within your reach. The most common cause of CGM detachment is accidental removal, so remember: just like in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location.
- CGMs adhesives, does not like oils
Our skin naturally generates oils, which, at a molecular level, can weaken the adhesive bonds of CGMs. To mitigate this issue, it’s essential to thoroughly clean your skin before applying your Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) and to use an alcohol-based cleaner. As a solvent, alcohol effectively removes the lipids we produce; it dissolves the oils and evaporates quickly, further drawing out moisture. This process leaves your skin oil-free and dry, which is ideal for the adhesion of your CGMs.
- Sweat and moisture
Excessive sweat and moisture can lead to the premature detachment of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). To help mitigate this issue, consider using supportive tape or cloth as a preventive measure. Additionally, for those who sweat heavily, it is advisable to apply a skin barrier to reduce sweat accumulation beneath the CGM.
- CGM Patch can really help
Use a high-quality CGM patch, as it will enhance adherence and offer additional support. Ensure that your CGM patches are both waterproof and hypoallergenic for optimal comfort and effectiveness.
